First half dispels Lancers

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancers were held to 17 points in the first half Tuesday, entering the break down 30 points and they were unable to make up the difference in the second half, falling to Northeastern Junior College 84-60.

The Plainsmen jumped out to an early lead over the Lancers, growing a 10-point lead (14-4) in less than four minutes. The NJC offense exploded and took a 33-6 lead with 9:50 to go before halftime. By the break, the visitors had a 47-17 lead over the Lancers.

“There was a lack of movement and a lack of spacing on offense,” coach Neal Sherbeyn said. “We didn’t do anything to up our percentages. We just settled on bad shots.”

Coming back to the floor, the Lancers opened the second half on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 49-28. A three by Brandon Meadows with 4:21 to go brought the score to 71-55, but it was too little too late, with the Plainsmen cruising to the lead, despite being outscored 43-37 in the final 20 minutes.

“We started running the court like we were supposed to the entire time,” Sherbeyn said. “We had more penetration which opened up more on the outside and on the inside. Our percentages went up and we did gain, but you just can’t play a half of basketball.”

Alek Cosic was the top scorer for the Lancers with 17 points, including nine from behind the arc. He also had five rebounds and a block.

Jonathan Morrobel and Brandon Meadows both had 11 points, rounding out the Lancers in double-figures. The two combined for nine points from the free-throw line. Morrobel filled his stat line with five rebounds and six blocks, while Meadows tallied four boards and a block.

Walker Korell chipped in eight points, two boards, a team-high four assists and a steal. Trey Schroefel kicked in six points, while Jordan Mirich and Bruno Oliveira combined for seven. Mirich paced EWC with eight points, while adding three assists and two steals to his night. Schroefel completed his night with three assists.

EWC shot 36 percent from the floor, but only 23 percent from behind the arc. At the charity stripe, the Lancers knocked down 80 percent of their shots.

The loss dropped EWC to 1-19 on the year. The Lancers return to the floor Saturday when they host Air Force Prep, starting at 3 p.m.

“Air Force Prep is a good ball team,” Sherbeyn said. “They’re disciplined and in great shape. They’re always a tough team to play.”
