TORRINGTON – The Southeast Cyclones racked up a 34-15 lead at halftime over the Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers and cruised to the 58-29 win Thursday at Eastern Wyoming College.

Southeast started the game strong, outscoring L-FL 14-6 in the first frame. The Cyclones upped their scoring output to 20 points in the second quarter, while the Doggers added nine points to their total, heading into the break with the score at 34-15.

L-FL kept the Southeast offense relatively calm by limiting them to nine points in the third quarter, with the Doggers scoring eight of their own. Up 43-20 with eight minutes to go, Southeast outscored L-FL 15-6 in the final frame to cruise to the win.

Sterling Werner paced the Cyclones with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 from at the charity stripe. He also had a team-high eight rebounds, including four offensive, along with an assist and two steals.

Kaden Malm chipped in nine points, all of which came from behind the arc, while finishing his stat line with an assist and a steal. Bodie Herring accounted for eight points, a board and four assists.

Hayden Anderson and Sawyer Anderson had six points apiece, while combining for three rebounds and two steals. Brady Fullmer had five points, two rebounds and two steals, while Brant Fullmer chipped in two points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists.

Starters Cade Herring and Tim Becker had two points apiece, while combining for five boards, two assists and four steals. Patrick Swank and Michael Johnson rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

Cordell Forkner paced the Doggers with nine points, all of which came from three-point land. He added a rebound and a steal to his stat line. Scott Gilchriest also came off the bench to pour in eight points and rack up two boards and two assists.

“We had to play a lot of kids who are usually on our bench due to injury and illness and I think they did pretty well,” L-FL coach Steve Zimmerman said. “One of the things we have lacked all year is the ability to score a lot, but now we have a couple young guys who are showing they can help out in scoring.”

Ty Mueller notched six points, three rebounds and an assist in the loss. Cooper Hill, with four points, and Brandon Hill, with two points, rounded out the scoring for L-FL. The duo combined for five rebounds. Rhett Greenwald and Hayden Hill also had three rebounds apiece.

Pine Bluffs 83, Southeast 43

The Southeast Cyclones came out of the gates slow against second-ranked Pine Bluffs. The Hornets took a 15-3 lead after the first frame and expanded their lead to 43-9 at the break after outscoring Southeast 28-6 in the second.

Coming back to the floor, Southeast kept things close in the second, scoring 17 points to Pine Bluffs’ 18. The Hornets closed out the game with 22 points in the final eight minutes, while the Cyclones poured in 17.

Werner was again the top scorer for Southeast, racking up 12 points. He finished the night with a double-double, packing his stat line with 13 rebounds and five assists.

Sawyer Anderson chipped in eight points, while Hayden Anderson kicked in another seven. The two had five boards apiece, while Hayden Anderson had an assist and a steal. Malm accounted for six points, two boards and two assists, while Cade Herring added five points and a board.

Brady Fullmer and Bodie Herring rounded out the scoring for Southeast, combining for five points, seven rebounds and an assist.

Southeast’s 34 percent shooting percentage was just behind Pine Bluffs’ 38 percent. The Hornets hit nine three-pointers and went 12-of-17 from the charity stripe, while the Cyclones hit three shots from behind the arc and converting 8-of-16 from the free-throw line. Both teams had 35 rebounds, but a big difference came in turnovers, with Southeast committing 32 and Pine Bluffs limiting their turnovers to eight.

At the end of the weekend, the Cyclones sit at 7-10 on the year, but their 3-1 conference record puts them at second in the 2A Southeast standings. Southeast returns to its home floor Friday for a game against Lusk at 7 p.m., followed by a road game Saturday against Burns, tipping off at 4 p.m.

Lusk 62, L-FL 31

The Doggers struggled from the floor on Friday against Lusk, shooting 30 percent from the floor and only 18 percent from behind the arc in the 62-31 home loss.

Mueller and Gilchriest had eight points apiece in the win to pace the Doggers in scoring. Mueller filled his stat line with five rebounds and a steal, while Gilchriest accounted for two rebounds and a steal.

“I think over the last three weeks, Scott has really stepped up his game. He brings a scoring option that we don’t have and he was one I was very encouraged by. Cordell Forkner also improved and he has really come along,” Zimmerman said. He also noted the improvement of Cooper Hill and Bailey Powell.

Forkner contributed seven points, including one of the team’s two three-pointers, while tallying five rebounds and two assists. Cooper Hill hit the team’s other three pointer, finishing the game with three points and a rebound.

Greenwald, Powell and Brandon Hill combined for five points to round out the scoring, while also combining for seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The Doggers dropped to 2-14 on the year and they have lost eight-straight games. L-FL looks to reverse its recent trend, with a home game Friday against Kaycee at 6 p.m., followed by a road game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against Glenrock.

“Right now, we have a lot of uncertainty,” Zimmerman said with several players out or in limited action due to injury and illness. “Once they fully get back and we get blended, we will be a team that could qualify for state.”
