TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College sophomore volleyball player Makenna Reinert announced her intentions to continue her education and volleyball career at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas next fall on Wednesday afternoon.

She made the decision to join the Jet volleyball team not long ago.

“I made the decision a week before spring break,” Reinert said.

She made the trip to Wichita a week prior to that and immediately fell in love with the school.

“It’s really nice and has a beautiful facility,” Reinert said. “I love their colors. They are red, white and blue.”

Newman is a private NCAA Division II institution who plays in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Conference. The Jets finished the 2022 season with an 8-22 record.

“Makenna’s athleticism and ability to score points are two things that initially stood out to me,” Newman coach Marisa Compton said. “What made us even more excited about Makenna were the intangible things such as her work ethic, competitiveness and work in the classroom. All of those things made her a great fit for our program at Newman.”

Reinert was an Region IX All-Region player her freshman year helping lead the Lady Lancers to a third-place finish at the regional tournament.

She led the team with 253 kills. She also recorded 42 digs and 38 blocks during the 2021 season.

This past season, Reinert was second on the team in kills with 174. She also tallied 19 aces, 142 digs and 30 blocks.

“I loved my time here. It was something really special,” Reinert said. “My freshman year was amazing. I was right side, and this year, I was a right side and outside. I loved the teams both years. It was really awesome. The culture here is something else that is amazing.”

She plans to major in marketing and hopes to pursue a career in sports marketing.

“Makenna is probably one of greatest kids I’ve ever met,” EWC volleyball coach Judd Wisener said. “She has an awesome family. She puts in the work. She had a 4.0 (GPA) last semester. She encompasses what I’m looking for moving forward in EWC volleyball. Great people, great community members and great in the classroom, and she embodied all of that. She jumped on board as soon as I got here. It’s been awesome having her.”
