EWC Lancer golf begins season with a victory

RIVERTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancer Golf season began with a tournament hosted by Central Wyoming College in Riverton on September 6-7.

The Lancers won the tournament with a total score of 597. CWC placed 2nd with a score of 616.

Leading the Lancers was sophomore George Elliott, Salisbury, England, who won the tournament with a two-day total of 143 (72, 71). Other Lancer scores were as follows:

Gonzalo Arcelay Fernandez-Meras, sophomore, Munguia, Spain, 74, 74 – 148, third

Harry Walch, sophomore, Staines, England, 76, 77 – 153, seventh

RJ Moya, freshman, Three Rivers, TX, 79, 75 – 154, eighth

Mason Hale, freshman, Atkinson, NE, 78, 79 – 157, tied 11th

Kash Kaufman, sophomore, Torrington, WY, 87, 78 – 165, tied 18th

“We set a target as a team for the first day score and they met that target. Then they went out and improved on that target for day two,” said Coach Zach Smith. “I was pleased to see the leadership from the sophomores and proud of how the freshmen played at their first collegiate tournament. George played really well. I was happy for him.”

The Lancers will host their home tournament at the Cottonwood Golf Course Thursday and Friday, September 13-14. Action gets under 1 p.m. Thursday.
