EWC bounced in quarterfinals

CASPER – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers fell behind by 12 points in the first quarter against Miles Community College at the Region IX Tournament in Casper on Thursday, going on to lose 74-53.

EWC was limited to six points in the first quarter, with the Lady Pioneers taking an 18-6 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, the Lady Lancers had lost ground by one more point, facing a 30-17 disadvantage.

Returning to the floor, Miles exploded for 20 points in the third quarter to up its total to 50, while EWC was held to 33 after the third. Heading into the final 10 minutes of action the Lady Lancers had 17 points to make up. EWC did score 20 in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Pioneers amassed 24 in the frame to seal the big win.

Pamela Bethel paced EWC with 15 points on the night, including six from behind the arc and five from the charity stripe. Rounding out her stat line, the sophomore had eight rebounds, two blocks and four steals.

Lauren O’Connell was second in scoring with 14 points, with six of those coming from deep. She also had four rebounds, an assist and three steals. Ines Salat Margarit rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, two rebounds and two steals.

Rounding out the starters, Abril Rexach Roure and Macie Mackey combined for six points. Rexach notched two steals and led the team in rebounds, with nine, and assists, with five. Mackey chipped in four assists and a steal.

Four girls off the bench put in a bucket for EWC. Southeast’s Emily Buchanan had two points, a rebound and an assist on the night. Cathlyn Knutson kicked in two points and a steal. Adaora Ezikeolisa and Nicole Cutler rounded out the scoring with two points apiece. Ezikeolisa finished the night with two rebounds and a steal, while Cutler added another board.

The Lady Lancers shot 32 percent from the floor, while the Lady Pioneers had a mark of 53 percent from the field. From behind the arc, EWC hit 6-of-27 (22 percent), while Miles knocked down 9-of-21 (43 percent). EWC did make it to the charity stripe more than Miles, but couldn’t make the most of the opportunities, shooting 9-of-16 compared to Miles’ 9-of-10. The Lady Pioneers outrebounded the Lady Lancers 38-33.

In the next round, Miles fell to Casper College 60-56. The Lady Thunderbirds went on to win the Region IX Tournament over Western Nebraska Community College 85-75.

The loss against the Lady Pioneers snapped the Lady Lancers’ eight-game winning streak that they were on and ended their season. EWC posted a 21-11 record this season.
