TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College basketball teams were swept Wednesday evening at the hands of the Casper College Thunderbirds.

In the women’s game, the No. 4-ranked and undefeated Lady T-Birds pulled away late to pick up a 66-43 win over the Lady Lancers.

The EWC women led for much of the first quarter.

Freshman Mara Neira opened the game with a 3-pointer, and the Lady Lancers led until the 1:15 mark in the opening frame.

Casper College grabbed a 12-10 lead at that point, pushing the lead to six heading into the second quarter.

The visitors pushed the lead to double digits in the second quarter before Eastern Wyoming chipped away at the deficit over the early moments of the fourth quarter.

Buckets by sophomores Mariana Zanelatto Minotto and Raleigh Bassert drew EWC back within 44-36 with 8:17 left in the game.

It proved to be as close as the Lady Lancers came to regaining the lead.

Over the final eight minutes, Casper College outscored EWC 22-7 to pull away for the road victory.

Sophomore Montse Gutierrez Ibanez led the Lady Lancers with 12 points, while freshman Janette Hanni added eight. Neira tossed in five.

In the men’s game, the Lancers raced out to an 8-0 lead before Casper got on the scoreboard, but by the final horn, the Thunderbirds overtook EWC in the second half, handing the home team an 87-75 loss.

EWC held a 1-0 lead before a second was even off the clock due to a pre-game technical foul on Casper.

The Lancers ended up winning the opening tip and freshman Terrance Jones scored the first field goal of the game.

Eastern Wyoming pushed its lead to eight and kept it there before Casper made a run, cutting the EWC lead to 19-18 midway through the first quarter.

The Lancers started to pull away late in the first half.

Two 3-pointers by freshman Sofyane Nocara and a third by freshman Nikolas Gustavson gave EWC a 40-29 lead – the team’s largest of the game.

Momentum quickly shifted in the visitors favor I the second half, as the T-Birds closed the gap to three inside the first three minutes of the second.

Casper grabbed its first lead of the game at 45-44 with 15:31 remaining in the game.

The Lancers never led again the rest of the game as the Thunderbirds pulled away for the 12-point victory.

Jones led the Lancers with 26 points, while freshman Kayden Toldson and Nocara added 12 points each. Gustavson tossed in 10.

The EWC teams are back in action Saturday on the road in Riverton. They will tip off against Central Wyoming College at 2 and 4 p.m.
