Ephesians 10:6-17

She stands proudly outside our home in hopes of never being used. She isn’t the “normal” bright cherry red that you might expect, she is a bit sun faded yellow, but in top notch condition, she is Prairie Center Engine 18.

For as long as I can remember, Greg and I have had the same fire truck. She spends the winter tucked into the fire hall so the water doesn’t freeze, and as soon as the possibility of a hard freeze is past she comes to spend the summer and early fall with us. As all do, we have taken good care of her, there will be times that our life is in her hands.

As a call comes in we are ready with fire retardant clothing, leather boots and gloves. In the front right hand compartment of our truck the rest of the safety gear is stowed away. We are praying we never need the fire shelter which would only be deployed in an emergency situation to save our lives. Our helmets are also contained there as well as smoke masks.

It’s fire season, we stand ready at all times. Sitting on the hill watching the lightening as it goes through is how we spend many evenings, praying the clouds contain rain. We contact our neighbors when we are going to be gone so we know how many folks are in the neighborhood.  We keep our lawns and outlying areas mowed and as green as we can to protect our homes. We stand ready.

Whether we like to think of it in these terms, every day in our lives is fire season. There our outside forces that seek to kill and destroy. I Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. That’s the bad news. The good news is this, we have EVERYTHING we need to fireproof our lives. His name is Jesus. It sure doesn’t mean we won’t have a bit of a flame on occasion and at times a full out running fire. But we don’t have to be destroyed, we have what we need.

God’s word, the Bible has a plan for every one of life’s fires. Financial trouble, marriage trouble, kid problems, you name it it’s there. If we spend time in the Word and know what our plan of attack is, we can knock down a life flame before it grows into a 12 alarm fire. We can prepare daily by spending time with Him, and we can put on our spiritual safety gear. Ephesians 10:6-17 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Stand ready friends, we have to stand ready.
