TORRINGTON – No services will be held at this time for Elmer James McElhaney, 96, who died at his daughter’s home on Dec. 8, 2017, surrounded by the presence and love of his daughters and their families. Cremation has taken place and a private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
Elmer was a special person and he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Memorials may be given to First Congregational Church of Torrington, Regional West Hospice or the donor’s choice. Condolences may be sent to his daughter’s home: 510 East 27th Avenue, Torrington, Wyoming 82240.
Elmer was born Sept. 7, 1921, in rural Torrington to Vern and Alta (Vandel) McElhaney. He graduated from Torrington High School. He served in the Navy during World War II and later traveled to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight. Elmer’s career was as a letter carrier for the USPS. He was married to Virginia Davis on Jan. 3, 1941, and they enjoyed nearly 70 years of marriage before her death. The couple had four children: James A., Marleen Shively, Virginia (Ginny) Becker and Marie (Midge) Bussey. He was a long-time member of the Letter Carriers Union, the American Legion Post #5, AARP, and he attended the First Congregational Church. Elmer enjoyed fishing, hunting rocks and wild game, and gardening. He lived for the past five years with his daughter Ginny and enjoyed time with her family, becoming especially close to her two youngest grandchildren.
Elmer is survived by his son James, daughters Ginny and Midge, seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, wife Virginia, daughter Marleen, and grandson Paul Bussey.
