Doggers aim for upsets

DOUGLAS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Dogger boys are the third seed from the southeast conference heading into the 1A East Regional Tournament, so they will rely on upsets to punch their ticket for state.

L-FL’s first game came against Hulett, the second seed from the northeast, on Thursday after press time. The Red Devils came into the contest with a 14-6 record. Hulett beat L-FL in a 66-65 decision on Dec. 15.

If the Doggers pulled off a Thursday win, they advanced to the semi-finals, where they play the winner between Hanna-Elk Mountain and Normative Services. With a loss against Hulett, L-FL plays the loser between the Miners and Wolves in a loser-out game. HEM took the top spot in the 1A Southeast with a 12-8 record, while NSI is the fourth seed from the northeast, sitting at 3-7.

Kaycee (19-3) tops the other side of the bracket. The Buckaroos, sitting third in the rankings, are the only ranked team from the eastern side of the state. Kaycee beat L-FL 65-29 on Feb. 9.

Rounding out the other side of the bracket is Rock River, Midwest and Guernsey-Sunrise. The Longhorns are 4-15 on the year, with the Oilers coming in at 10-9. Guernsey-Sunrise is the fourth seed from the southeast, sitting at 1-16. Against Rock River, Midwest and Guernsey-Sunrise, the Doggers are 1-2, falling to Midwest 51-44 on Dec. 16. L-FL split games against the Vikings this winter, winning 48-44 (Jan. 6), but losing 40-38 (Jan. 18).

The Doggers, who are 2-18 on the year, will need to string a couple upsets together to reach the state tournament. With only four teams advancing, L-FL will have to get through several solid teams to make it to Casper.
