Cyclones place eight in top-eight in Mitchell

MITCHELL, Neb. – The Southeast Cyclones had eight top-eight finishes at the Mitchell, Neb. Invite on Thursday, with the boys team finishing 10th and the girls sliding into 12th.

On the boys side, Chase Lovercheck placed in two individual events. With a time of 53.21 seconds in the 400-meter dash, he finished fifth. He just snuck into the top-eight in the 200, clocking a time of 24.03 seconds.

Rounding out the top-eight performances for the boys, the Cyclones picked up the first-place crown in the 1600-meter relay. Lovercheck, Kaden Malm and Brady and Brant Fullmer combined for a time of 3:37.69, which was almost two seconds faster than the second-place team from Gering, Neb.

Southeast had several Cyclones just miss the top-eight. D.J. Homer, Reece Robertson, Hayden Anderson and Brant Fullmer finished the 400-meter relay in 49.54 seconds to finish ninth. Anderson also finished ninth in the 800 with a time of 2:19.05. Patrick Swank took 10th in the 3200, recording a time of 11:58.31. Joining Lovercheck in the 400, Malm finished with a time of 55.63 seconds, earning 10th.

The Southeast boys finished with 12 team points to slide into the 10th slot in the standings, just ahead of Hemingford, Neb., with 11 points. Sidney, Neb. took the top spot with 102 points, while Gering, Neb., with 90 points, and Mitchell, with 80 points, completed the top-three.

Girls

Hailey Anderson had the best finish among all Lady Cyclones, when she took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.91. She was also a leg on the fifth-place 3200-meter relay team, along with Jaiden Hopkins, Kelci Lovercheck and Ellie Schmitt. The foursome finished with a time of 11:10.53.

Southeast had three different throwers finish in the top-eight across the two throwing events. Candee Coxbill recorded a throw of 95 feet, 4 inches in the discus to take seventh. Kylie Carson, who took eighth, was not far behind with a 95-foot, 1-inch effort. In the shot put, Morgan Ekwall had a put of 30 feet, 6.75 inches to finish eighth.

Emma Short had a solid day in the sprints, but just missed the top-eight twice. She finished ninth in both the 100 (13.86 seconds) and 200 (29.10 seconds). Hopkins also had a ninth-place finish on the day with a time of 6:20.03 in the 1600.

Schmitt rounded out those in the top-10 after clearing 4 feet, 6 inches in the high jump.

The Lady Cyclones notched eight points on the day, tying Morrill, Neb. for 12th in the team race. Only six points separated 11th-place and 16th-place. It was a tight race at the top of the standings as well, with Sidney, Neb. earning the win with 93.5 points. Gering, Neb. finished second with 92 points and Mitchell was third with 89 points.

The Cyclones resume action Friday, when some of the team heads to the Okie Blanchard Invitational at Cheyenne East and the rest of the team is slated to compete at the Burns Invitational.
