SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Southeast Cyclones track team had only five entries Wednesday in the prestigious Best in the West Classic in Scottsbluff, but made the most of those opportunities, making the podium four times.
Lovercheck had the best day, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.20 seconds.
The Cyclone senior was also on the 1600-meter relay along with Kaden Malm and Brant and Brady Fullmer. The foursome finished in 3:31.16 to take second in the event.
With the two top-two finishes, the Cyclones finished 12th in the team standings with 18 points, just ahead of Burns’ 17.5 points and Crawford, Neb.’s 16 points. Scottsbluff ran away with the boys team title with 131 points, outdistancing Nebraska squads Sidney (77) and Gering (58.5).
On the track for the Lady Cyclones, Hailey Anderson snagged second in the 400, clocking a time of 1:02.75.
Southeast also had a representative in each of the throwing events. Morgan Ekwall notched a put of 34 feet, 7.5 inches in the shot put to take second. Candee Coxbill recorded an eighth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, 5 inches.
Southeast’s 17 points put them 13th in the standings. Four points separated 11th and 15th place, with the Lady Cyclones sandwiched in the middle. Scottsbluff completed the sweep by picking up the girls team title with 99 points. Sidney’s 78 points narrowly edged Gering’s 76 points to round out the top-three.
The entire Cyclones team returns to the track Saturday for the Dennis Zowada Invitational in Lusk.
