YODER – After a slow start by both teams, the Southeast Cyclones grabbed a lead Tuesday over Burns and continued to build on that lead, winning 44-30 in a 2A Southeast conference matchup.

“It was a win,” coach Crockett Herring said. “It was not pretty, but it was a win so I was happy.”

The game was scoreless for the first couple of minutes, but by the end of the first frame, Southeast was up 10-5. The Cyclones added to their lead by outscoring the Broncs 8-5 in the second quarter, going into halftime up 18-10. The Cyclones were without starting point guard Kaden Malm due to injury and that was felt by Southeast.

“It was a learning experience for the younger kids because we didn’t have a point guard,” Herring said. “It was very disjointed. It was a feeling out period.”

In the third quarter, Southeast limited Burns’ offense even more, keeping them to three points, while pouring in nine of their own to take a 14-point lead (27-13) into the final eight minutes of action. The Bronc offense exploded for 17 points in the fourth quarter, but Southeast matched that scoring total with 17 of their own, putting the 44-30 game out of reach.

Cade Herring stepped up as the leading scorer for the Cyclones, tallying 14 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal on the night. He knocked down the team’s lone three-pointer and went to the charity stripe for eight free-throw attempts, knocking down seven of those attempts.

“He looked to go get the ball in the fourth and he kept getting fouled,” Herring said. “He kept getting fouled and he went 6-for-6 from the line in the fourth and I can’t ask for more from him.”

Brady Fullmer and Sterling Werner joined Herring in double-figures. Fullmer filled his stat line with 12 points, three rebounds, an assist and four steals. Werner chipped in 10 points in the win and he led the Cyclones in rebounds, with nine, assists, with three, steals, with six, and blocks, with one.

Hayden Anderson, Sawyer Anderson and Brant Fullmer rounded out the scoring for Southeast, combining for eight points. The two Anderson’s also combined for 11 rebounds, an assist and four steals. Bodie Herring,

The win over Burns ups the Cyclones to 5-8 on the year, with a 2-0 record against conference opponents. That 2-0 conference record puts the Cyclones at second in the standings behind Pine Bluffs (13-1, 3-0). Southeast looks to better its overall and conference record with a road game Saturday against Glenrock at 4:30 p.m.
