Council addresses start-of-year housecleaning

TORRINGTON – The Torrington City Council kicked off the new year with a short but important meeting Tuesday evening, Jan. 2. They approved Mayor Mike Varney’s list of appointed officials.
The only new member of the city’s officials is Goshen County native Michael Matthews, who was approved as the new interim Chief of Police. Also approved are City Attorney Jim Eddington, Fire Chief Lance Petsch, City Clerk/Treasurer Lynnette Strecker, City Engineer Jeffrey Harkins, Municipal Judge Gregory Knudsen, and associate municipal judges Nathaniel Hibben and Herbert Doby. Randy Adams was returned as Mayor Pro Tem. The appointments were made on a motion by Councilwoman Deanna Hill, and seconded by Councilman Randy Adams.
On a motion by Councilman Dennis Kelly, and seconded by Councilman Bill Law, the Council also renewed the “full time” mayor designation, which is done annually for the current mayor.
In two separate actions, the Council also approved institutions as depositories and/or security broker/dealers for the City of Torrington, as well as bills for the period Dec. 20, 2017-Jan. 2, 2018.
The meeting ended with an executive session dealing with personnel, after which no action was taken.
