Bake-sale fundraiser Saturday

TORRINGTON – Journey Church will host the first in a series of bake sales in front of the Pinnacle Bank downtown to raise funds to send children from the church to
summer camp.

The first sale is set for Saturday, April 7, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Subsequent sales will be Saturday, April 14, and again on Saturday, May 12 and May 19. Sales will go on until 1 p.m., or all the goodies are sold.

The bake sales will be cancelled in case of rain or a hard snow.

Library Spring Sale

TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Library Foundation will host its annual Spring Book Sale, April 7 – 21, at the Goshen County Library Annex at 2017 East A St. in Torrington.

Sale hours will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. A variety of quality used books will be on sale, full price, from April 7 to April 14. Shoppers will get the opportunity of “fill-a-bag” with books from among the unsold selections from April 16 – 21.

Smart Driver course offered

TORRINGTON – The AARP of Goshen County will host two Smart Driver Course classes during April.

The Senior Friendship Center in Torrington will host the courses, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 25. Smart Driver is a refresher course specifically targeted to drivers 50 years of age and older.

Cost for either course day is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Call Susan at the Senior Friendship Center for more information or to register at (307) 532-2796.

Kindergarten registration

GOSHEN COUNTY – Early registration for kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year at Lingle-Fort Laramie, Southeast and LaGrange elementary schools will be
April 9 – 11.

Registration packets will be available at the respective school offices throughout registration week. Parents must complete the packets and provide immunization records and a certified birth certificate to verify the child’s age. Children must be five-years-old on or before Sept. 15 to enroll in kindergarten.

North Platte water meet set

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will host a meeting to update the status of the North Platte River water system going into the upcoming irrigation
season.

Bureau staff will be at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center auditorium at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, in Scottsbluff. Topics covered in the update will include reservoir storage and current supply conditions on the North Platte River system. Snowmelt runoff and reservoir operation expectations will also be discussed.

Weather spotter class offered

TORRINGTON – The National Weather Service in conjunction with Goshen County Emergency Management will offer a Weather Spotter Class here.

The class will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, at the Torrington Fire Hall, 2001 W. C St. in Torrington. Attendees are requested to park on the side streets the evening of the class.

While the target audience is first responders, this class is open to the public.

April 10 has been designated Severe Weather Awareness Day in Goshen County.

Also on that Tuesday, Goshen County Emergency Management will be testing outdoor warning sirens around the county and in the communities of Fort Laramie, Lingle, Yoder, Hawk Springs and LaGrange. Testing is scheduled from 10 – 10:30 a.m.

Mobile Food Pantry in Torrington

GOSHEN COUNTY – Torrington will host the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies Mobile Food Pantry from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 16 at the Pavilion on the Goshen County Fairgrounds.

There are no qualifications required to participate in the food pantry distribution.

Volunteers are needed for two shifts, from 1 to 4 p.m. for setup and distribution and 4 to 7 p.m., for distribution and to assist with cleanup. To sign up in advance to volunteer, please go online to www.signupgenius.com/go/5080548afad29a6f58-april1.

Job Expo returns to EWC

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College will host its annual Job Expo, set for Tuesday, April 17, in the Petsch Center Gymnasium on the campus in Torrington.

The Expo will be open to the general public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To register a business or company, or for additional information, contact Jo Ellen Keigley at (307) 532-8288.

EWC will also host a pre-expo job workshop, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 10. The workshop will go over resume planning and writing. Contact Donna White at (307) 532-8323 to register or for more information. The workshop is free and the public is invited.

Women’s self-defense class offered

TORRINGTON – The Community Education Office at Eastern Wyoming College will host a one-night self-defense class geared specifically toward women in April.

The class is scheduled for 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19. Cost is $20 per session.

The class is designed to increase personal awareness, reducing the chance of being put in a compromising situation at home, in a parking lot or while out. Basic defensive techniques will be demonstrated and opportunity will be provided for practice.

Chili, soup supper

HAWK SPRINGS – The Community Building in Hawk Springs will fill with the smells of homemade soup and chili during the spring Chili and Chicken Noodle Soup Supper here later this month.

Serving will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at the Community Building in Hawk Springs. The menu will include chili, chicken noodle soup, desserts and drinks. Free-will donations will be accepted. 

All proceeds from the donations will go toward upkeep and preservation of the Community Building.

First aid classes offered

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Workforce Development office will offer a combined CPR/first aid class from 5 – 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25.

In addition to basic first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training, the class will cover use of the automated external defibrillator and Basic Life Support training for emergency situations. Cost for the class is $60 for the CPR/First Aid/AED training and $55 for Basic Life Support instruction.

Gear Up Color Run announced

TORRINGTON – The Gear Up club at Eastern Wyoming College will again host a 5K Color Run for the community.

This year’s run is set to kick off at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 28. Runners are asked to meet at the CTEC Building on the EWC campus in Torrington. 

Entrance fees are $20 for individual runners and $40 for teams of as many as three runners. Teams with four or more runners can register for $60, with a $5 per person surcharge for each runner on teams of five or more. Registration forms are available at the EWC information center, the Gear Up office or at the campus Fitness Center.

Sponsorship proceeds will go toward funding scholarships for Gear Up students
attending EWC.

Art open house

TORRINGTON – The Charcoal and Quill Guild will host an open house and art show from 6 – 7 p.m. April 30 at the Goshen County Public Library.

Charcoal and Quill Guild is a group of young artists working in a variety of media, from drawing and painting to writing. 

Benefit dinner

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Elks Lodge will host a benefit enchilada dinner next month for a local man battling cancer.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door for the Jack Bower Cancer Fund benefit, scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the lodge in Torrington. The event will also feature a silent auction as well as a “gift card table” for the fund.

Torrington Alumni reunion

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Trailblazer Alumni Reunion is scheduled for June 1-3.

All alumni and friends are invited to attend lunch, banquet and brunch that weekend. This reunion includes classes from 1938 - 1968. Registrations are due by May 10.
