College names employee, volunteer of the year

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College is proud to announce the recognition of Mrs. Sue Schmidt, who won the Classified Employee of-the-Year award and Mr. Chuck Brown, who won the Foundation Volunteer Leadership Award of-the-year at the Wyoming Association of Community College Trustees conference held in Cheyenne, WY on February 21, 2018.  Schmidt and Brown, bested nominees from each of the Wyoming community colleges around the state. 

Schmidt began her Administrative Specialist career at EWC in 1985 working in registration and records. She works with over 700 students’ yearly, providing enrollment assistance, transcript request and degree evaluations. She was instrumental in obtaining e-scripts on the campus, leading to faster and more efficient services to our current and former students. “Sue is very involved in campus activities and you will see her and her husband at almost all the home Lancer games. This award was earned by a truly strong supporter of EWC and epitomizes the work ethic we so appreciate at EWC,” said Dr. Lesley Travers, President.    

Brown is the owner of C.H. Brown Co., LLC in Wheatland, Wyoming at the foothills of the Laramie Range and has provided quality services for over 40 years. “Everyone knows Chuck and his impeccable reputation and his work ethics.” stated Dr. Travers, “Additionally, Mr. Brown was a 2011 winner of U.W.’s Distinguished Alumni Award. He is obviously a very busy and well-connected community member in Wheatland and Wyoming,” continued Travers. 

Brown has been a member of the EWC Foundation for 6 years. He is always there to lend a helping hand, have a kind word and sense of fairness towards donors, students and the college. In 2008 he was selected as EWC’s Outstanding Alumnus for his success in businesses and philanthropic service. He is a passionate advocate for EWC’s foundation and creation of a robust alumni association. “Chuck Brown is a dedicated Foundation Director, former Distinguished Alumnus of EWC, and has a true passion and belief in our College” said John Hansen, EWC’s Office of Development Director. “We are fortunate and benefit greatly from his wisdom and guidance.” 

Achievement awards were given for Student of the Year, Classified Employee, Faculty Member, Professional Employee, Trustee Leadership Award, and Foundation Volunteer Leadership Award.  Nomination packets included examples on how the nominee has had a positive impact on their community college, leadership roles and involvement in the community. 

Other Eastern Wyoming College nominees included Jared Pilkington, Student; Dr. Susan Walker, Faculty; Diane McQueen, Professional Staff; and Mike Varney, Trustee Leadership Award.
