‘Clone wrestlers fourth at Garden County

OSHKOSH, Neb. – Led by seven wrestlers placing in the top four in their weight class, the Southeast Cyclones racked up 100.5 points at the Garden County, Neb. Invite in Oshkosh on Saturday, finishing fourth.

When the dust settled at the end of the day, Chase Lovercheck was standing atop the podium at 145 points. He opened with a bye, before picking up a 17-2 technical fall win over Donovan DeLosSantos (Gering JV). In the semi-final, Lovercheck pinned Lingle-Fort Laramie’s Zane Rising in the second period to advance to the championship match. The Cyclone went the distance to win first, snagging a 7-2 decision over William White (Sutherland).

Fellow Cyclone Brock Blevins had a similar run to his first-place finish at 113 pounds after receiving an opening round bye. Blevins picked up a pin at the 3:07 mark over Bridgeport’s Chance Cooper, before pinning Brenden Warman (Dundy County) in the second period. In the title match, Blevins won over Teven Marshall (Mullen) by a pin in the first period.

At 195 pounds, Bryan Baker finished second in Oshkosh. He had two byes to open the day. In his first match, Baker pinned Minatate’s Isaac Gomez in the first period. In the championship match, the Cyclone was pinned in the first period by Bridgeport’s Marce Vasquez.

Greg Logsdon was one of four Cyclones to finish fourth. At 106 pounds, Logsdon started off his day with a pin over North Platte’s Skyler Geier-Dodson in the second period. Logsdon was then pinned in the second period by Marco Martinez (Sedgwick County) to drop to the consolation bracket.

In the lower bracket, Logsdon rattled off two wins by pin, the first over Conrad Sibal (Gering JV) in the first period and the second over fellow teammate Kaden Brothwell in the second period. Against Brock Little (North Platte) in the consolation semi-finals, Logsdon won by an 8-6 decision to advance to the third-place match, where he was pinned at the 2:57 mark.

Brady Tosh competed at 170 pounds where he finished fourth, starting the day with a bye before being pinned in the second period against Wyatt Mader (Crawford). In the lower bracket, Tosh bested Hemingford’s Alex Neefe via a 19-3 technical fall, followed by two wins by pin, snagging wins over Choyce Deuerlein (North Platte) at the 1:55 mark and Jack Kennicutt (Perkins County) at the 4:15 mark. Charles Lange ended Tosh’s run by pinning him in the third period in the third-place match.

Tate Carson (182) opened his day with a bye, before winning his quarterfinal matchup by an 11-5 decision over Fabian Lopez (Sedgwick County). Perkins County’s Beau Wood pinned Carson in the first period to send him to the lower bracket, where Carson won his next match by a 4-2 decision over Steven Tobacco (Bayard). In the third-place match, Carson went the distance but lost by an 8-2 decision against Hay Springs’ Bryce Running Hawk.

Heavyweight Hunter Woodruff was the final Cyclone to finish fourth. He had an opening round bye, followed by a pin at the 1:49 mark against Shawn Bailey (Sedgwick County). In the semi-final, Woodruff went the distance but lost to Cade Payne (Hemingford) by a score of 8-5. In the consolation semis, woodruff pinned Emillio Perez (Perkins County) in the second period. Woodruff again went all six minutes in the third-place match, losing by a 7-3 decision against Bridgeport’s Curtis Freeze.

Brothwell (106) had his day ended by Logsdon, his fellow teammate at 106 pounds. Brothwell suffered a first loss by a pin against Tyler Nagel (Morrill), before beating Robert Walraven (Sedgwick County) by pin at the 0:43 mark, setting up the teammate matchup.

At 120 pounds, Wyatt Lackman went 2-2. He won his first match by a 7-0 decision against Crawford’s James Kriz, before losing by a 3-0 decision against North Platte’s Corey Parsons. After a bye in the lower bracket, Lackman pinned Trevor Snyder (North Platte) in the third period. Lackman’s day was ended by a loss via a 1-0 decision against Hunter Kildow (Bayard).

Joining Tosh at 170 pounds, Connor Smith went 1-2 Saturday. he won his first match by a 6-5 decision against Hemingford’s Neefe. In the quarterfinal, Smith was pinned in the second period against Kennicutt (Perkins County). After a bye, Smith lost by a 9-1 major decision against Mullen’s Riley Kessler.

Ethan Steinhausen was the final Cyclone to compete in Oshkosh, going 0-2 at 160 pounds. He had two byes and suffered losses by pin against Karsen Hunter (Bayard) and Josh Cox (Mullen).

The Cyclones amassed 100.5 team points to finish fourth, edging out Sedgwick County, who finished fifth with 95.5 points. Bridgeport took the crown with 177 points, with Morrill (140 points) and Mullen (124.5 points) rounding out the top three.

Southeast returns to the mat Friday to compete in a quad in Mullen, Neb., followed by a tournament Saturday in Sandhills, Neb.
