Cats dominate in Tigers’ home outing

TORRINGTONIt was a battle of the felines Wednesday at Dean Bullock Field as the Torrington Tigers senior American Legion hosted the Douglas Cats for at 23-11 drubbing on their home turf.

“We made a few mental errors and missed a few routing plays that should have been made,” assistant coach Ryan Kath said. “It’s tough to beat a team when you make errors like that in the field.”

The first inning told the tale of the remainder of the game as the Cats batted around their order and partway through again with just one out on the board from Tiger Cameron Murphy on the mound. Several Cats crossed the plate on just two hits in the inning, pushing their lead to 8-0 before the Tigers touched a bat.

The Torrington boys battled back, scoring two runs on a Douglas error. But the trend continued as the Cats upped their lead to 12, 14-2, in the second. Torrington again rallied in the bottom of the inning, upping their run count to seven. But the damage had been done and the Tigers would never recover.

“We had to make a few adjustments to the pitching rotation (against Douglas) in order to have enough arms for the tournament this weekend,” Kath said. “We just need to turn over a new leaf and start playing cleaner baseball going in to the second half of the season.”

Torrington returned to the diamond Thursday for a game against Wheatland in the Westco Tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb., after press time. They’ll return to Dean Bullock Field tonight (Friday) to host Alliance before heading back to Scottsbluff for two games in the Westco Tournament Saturday, starting at 5 p.m.
