LINGLE – Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Carl “Joe” Welte, 77, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Saint Rose Catholic Church with Father Dan Kostelc officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Lingle.

Joe died March 10, 2023, at Goshen Healthcare Community. Memorials may be given to the Knights of Columbus. A Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. prior to the mass. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and the casket will be open at the rosary. Joe was born Jan. 10, 1946, in Broken Bow, Nebraska, the son of Carl and Marie (Fritz) Welte Sr. He grew up in Ansley, Nebraska where he received his education, graduating Ansley High School. He attended college for a short time before entering the US Navy. Upon his discharge, he returned to Nebraska. He married Sally Baburek Nov. 26, 1971, in Broken Bow. They lived in Alliance, Nebraska, where he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad. He spent his entire career with Burlington retiring in 2006. They moved to Lingle in 1980. 

Joe enjoyed model railroading, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Saint Rose Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. 

Joe is survived by his son William (Chris) Welte of Central City, Nebraska; daughter Tammy (Jeffrey) Odell of Greeley, Colorado; sister Carla (Steve) Jeschke of Minnesota; brothers Louis (Jeanne) Welte of Nebraska and Brad (Susan) Welte of California; and grandchildren Zack, Zander and Zane Welte and Emma and Nathan Odell. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Sally.
