Burroughs earns scholarship, spot on Wyoming’s depth chart

LARAMIE – When spring practice wrapped up for the University of Wyoming football team, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the fullback position.

However, it didn’t take long for things to work themselves out once fall practice began, and Southeast High School graduate Jeff Burroughs made his presence felt.

“Coach told me in the spring the depth chart was going to be in flux and didn’t know who was going to be where,” Burroughs said.

On Monday, the picture became clearer when Cowboy head coach Craig Bohl released the team’s first depth chart going into Saturday’s season opener at New Mexico State.

A few days into practice, Burroughs found out Jaylon Watson would be the starting fullback, but the No. 2 through No. 4 spots were still up for grabs.

It wasn’t long after that things started falling into place for Burroughs during one-on-one meetings with the coaching staff.

“I had a pretty good fall camp, and about 10 days in, I found out I was going to be the No. 2,” he said. “I was just glad I was going to be playing.”

But the good news wasn’t finished coming for the redshirt sophomore as Burroughs was surprised with another piece of news this week.

After a strong showing during fall practice, Burroughs not only landed on the two-deep depth chart but also found out he is no longer classified as a walk-on.

Tuesday it was announced Bohl honored Burroughs for his efforts with a scholarship.

“I really didn’t have any idea it was going to happen,” Burroughs said. “Just the other day, coach came up to me and said I had been doing some good things and that he had decided to put me on a scholarship. It caught me off guard, honestly.”

Going into Saturday’s 8 p.m. kickoff with the Aggies on ESPN2, Burroughs isn’t sure how much playing time he’ll see. But he has had a chance to visit with Watson, who was the No. 2 fullback a year ago.

“Last year Jaylon was the No. 2 and just talking with him, game plan-wise, it will vary week-to-week,” Burroughs said. “I think he played in most every game, but how many plays he would get, would vary on game plan and scheme and depending on what we were seeing from the defense that week.”

He anticipates that to be the case again this season but will be ready when his number is called on Saturday evening.
