TORRINGTON – Wyoming Secretary of State Edward A. Buchanan will be the commencement speaker at the 69th annual event, set for 7 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the EWC Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

A graduation barbecue for students and their families will be held in the Student Center from 4 – 6 p.m. The ceremony will begin with a processional provided by Janet Howard, pianist. Dr. Rex Cogdill, Vice President for Student Services, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

Dr. Lesley Travers, college president, will offer opening remarks and introduce special guests.

Following the address by Secretary Buchanan, EWC Foundation President Todd Peterson will present the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Albert C. Conger Distinguished Service Award.

Roger Humphrey, Vice President for Academic Services, will present the candidates for graduation.  Following will be the presentation of degrees and certificates by Mr. John Patrick, President of the Board of Trustees.

Buchanan was appointed Wyoming’s 22nd Secretary of State by Governor Mead on March 1, serving as the State’s Chief Elections Officer, Securities Commissioner, Corporations Administrator, and Notaries Public Commissioner. Additionally, he chairs the State Canvassing Board and serves with Wyoming’s other statewide elected officials on the State Loan and Investment Board, the Board of Land Commissioners and the State Building Commission.

Buchanan grew up in Goshen County on his family’s farm and ranch on Rawhide Creek. After graduating from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he was commissioned in the United State Air Force and served as an intelligence briefer to senior command.

While in uniform, he received a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado. Upon his return to civilian life, Ed attended the University of Wyoming College of Law, where he was awarded a place on the Board of Advocates. Ed returned to Goshen County upon graduation, where he established and grew a successful law practice in Torrington.

In 2002, Ed was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives and represented Goshen County for 10 years while continuing to run his law practice in Torrington. During his legislative tenure, he served as Chairman of Judiciary, Majority Floor Leader and as Speaker of the House.

Secretary Buchanan enjoys spending time with his wife and four children and he remains actively involved in his community. A licensed pilot, he enjoys flying across the skies of Wyoming on free weekends.
