Blazers win low-scoring affair

WHEATLAND – After a low scoring first half, the Torrington Trailblazers got their offense in gear in the second half on their way to a 43-30 win Friday in Wheatland over the Bulldogs.

“It is always good to get a win on the road in conference, but we were not at our best Friday night,” Torrington coach Neil Baker said. “We shot the ball poorly, which is rare for this team of good shooters, and we turned the ball over way to much.”

Neither team got out of the gates hot, with a lot of empty trips down the floor. By the end of the first quarter, Torrington held a 9-5 lead. After another slow quarter, the Blazers were up 17-12 at intermission over the Bulldogs.

Torrington got its offense moving better in the third quarter, putting up 12 points, while keeping Wheatland to seven points in the fame. The Bulldogs managed to put up 11 points in the fourth to bring their total to 30, but Torrington’s 14 points in the frame put the game out of reach.

“Defensively, we had some good moments, but we also let them get too many good looks in the second half,” Baker said.

Bryan Lemmon had the highest scoring total in the game, pouring in 16 points, with five coming from the charity stripe and another three from behind the arc. He rounded out his stat line with six rebounds, a steal and team-highs in assists (3) and blocks (3).

Jared Lemmon was not far behind his brother, piling up nine points for Torrington, while leading the Blazers with 15 rebounds and adding an assist and two steals to his stat line. Jordan Malm rounded out the top scorers for Torrington, with eight points to his credit, which he paired with five boards, an assist, two steals and a block.

Bo Moorehouse chipped in six points, seven rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block, while Nathan Stitt, Sam Firminhac and Devin Flores combined for four points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

For the Bulldogs, Trigg Peasley was the top scorer with eight points on three buckets and two free throws. Zac Gunter accounted for six points on two three-pointers, while Clayton Iacovetto had four points. Trevor Vaughn, Kobey Preuit and Justin Lema had three points apiece and Jamison Brown and Mytch Pollock combined for three points.

The win puts the Blazers up to 6-5 on the year, with a 1-1 record in the quadrant, tying them for second with Douglas. Torrington hosted Gering, Neb. on Tuesday after the press deadline and it returns to action Friday to host Douglas at 7 pm.

“We will need to continue to improve as our schedule gets a lot tougher over the next couple weeks,” Baker said.
