RAWLINS – The Torrington Trailblazers posted a 4-1 record in team duals Saturday at the Rawlins Rumble, picking up a fourth-place finish.

“I thought we did very well at this tournament,” coach Doyle Meyer said. “We stepped up to the intensity and came out strong. It was good to see other teams from the state and from Colorado.”

The Blazers started with a 72-10 win over Saratoga, before suffering their lone loss of the day against Moffat County, Colo. by a score of 45-24. Against Hanna-Elk Mountain/North Park, Colo., Torrington posted a 60-3 victory, before besting Lyman 42-15. Closing out the day, the Blazers secured a 48-0 win over Riverton.

Top performers for the Blazers included Quentin Meyer, Jacob Polkowske and Jacob Wamboldt, who all went 5-0 on the day.

“These three led the team by winning all of their matches,” Meyer said. “It was great to see them come out on the mat and pick up pins for the team. I’m excited to see what these three have going for them at regionals.”

On Thursday, the Blazers were edged in a road dual against Gering.

Gabe Mitchell stepped into the 182-pound slot for the Blazers, getting six points on the board in a forfeit. Riley Grubbs took on Cody Ybarra at 195 pounds, suffering a loss via pin in the first period. Brandon Bennick (220) went the distance against Quinten Onstott, but lost in a 9-2 decision before Jacob Wamboldt won via forfeit.

With the score at 12-9 in Torrington’s favor, the Bulldogs picked up four wins in a hurry, securing forfeits at 106, 113, 120 and 126. Pake Haun was the next Blazer to take the match, falling by pin in the third period against Aaron Tovar at 132 pounds. 138-pounder Cody Pierce made it to the second period, but was pinned by Julian Corona at the 3:17-mark.

Tristen Kingsley (145) got the Blazers back on the winning track by beating Enrique Saenz in a 4-2 decision. Jacob Polkowske followed that up with a 10-0 major decision win at 152 pounds over Andres Canales. Casey Britton continued the winning by pinning Jordan Overlin at the 2:28-mark. At 170 pounds, Josh Kingsley won by forfeit.

In exhibition matches, Carlos Fitzwater pinned Maverik Crable and Nathan Davis pinned Donovan DeLosSantos, both at the 2:30-mark. Nicholas Sherbeyn was pinned late in the third period against Trenton Overlin.

The Blazers have one dual remaining in the regular season when they take on Rawlins on Thursday at 6 p.m. Following the dual, Torrington has to prepare for the 3A Regional Tournament in Worland next weekend.

“I thought as a whole team we wrestled very well,” Meyer said. “I’m hoping we can build on these successes for the dual Thursday against Rawlins and then continue into regionals in Worland next Saturday.”
