NEWCASTLE – The Torrington Trailblazers boys soccer team was without a win over its last three games, but the Blazers turned that around in a big way Tuesday, dismantling Newcastle on the road, 10-0.
“We really came into this game and bounced back in a positive way,” coach Jeshua Arnusch said. “We went back to our team philosophy and worked together as a unit, both offensively and defensively.”
Nathan Stitt paced Torrington with four goals, while Kevin Gunhammer added another two goals. Anthony Munoz, Trace English, Braden Mechem and Tristen Kingsley all found the back of the net.
In the assist category, Ethan Creagar led the way with three to his credit. Gunhammer, Stitt, Nate Gutierrez and Ty Prall all had an assist in the win.
“I was really impressed with our young guys like Ty Prall, Kevin Gunhammer and Nate Gutierrez,” Arnusch said. “They gave us a big spark on both sides of the ball and earned quality varsity minutes.”
The Blazers improved to 8-6-1 on the year, with a 1-1-1 record in the conference. They close out the regular season on the road Saturday in a conference matchup against Rawlins. If Torrington can secure the win over the Outlaws, then it will automatically qualify for the state tournament.
“Now we have to go play Rawlins and get a win,” Arnusch said. “If we win, we get to bypass regionals and go straight to state. It’s going to be tough, but if we play the right style of soccer and attack the space behind Rawlins’ defensively line, we can get the win. Winning would be huge.”
