SIDNEY, Neb. – The Torrington Trailblazers suffered two losses to open the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout in Sidney over the weekend, losing to Beatrice, Neb. and Buffalo, before rebounding to beat Chase County, Neb. to close the weekend.

Beatrice 51, Torrington 39

The Blazers started out strong against Beatrice, with both schools putting up 15 points in the first six minutes, but then Torrington’s offense was halted. Beatrice closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run. Down 25-15 in the second, Torrington allowed only four points, but was blanked, heading into the break down 29-15. The Blazers were unable to turn the game around in the second half, falling 51-39.

“We made a couple runs in the second half but their defense was the difference in the game,” coach Neil Baker said.

Jordan Malm led the Blazers in the scoring department, racking up more than half of the team’s points with 20 to his credit. Bryan Lemmon chipped in nine points and four rebounds, while Jared Lemmon added eight points and six boards.

Buffalo 58, Torrington 45

After facing tough out of state competition, the Blazers squared off against 3A’s third-ranked Buffalo.

“Poor shooting and free throw shooting in the second half made it impossible to close the gap,” Baker said. “Even in defeat, it should be encouraging that even when we don’t play well, we were in the game until the end.”

Jared Lemmon took over as the top scorer for Torrington, netting 13 points along with six rebounds. Malm chipped in 10 points, while Bryan Lemmon kicked in another seven points, adding five rebounds to his stat line.

Bo Moorehouse, Nathan Stitt and Sam Firminhac all found themselves in the scoring column against Buffalo, racking up five points apiece.

Torrington 66, Chase Co. 58

Suffering two losses to open the tournament sent the Blazers to the seventh-place game against Chase County. After putting up 24 points in the first half, Torrington’s offense exploded for 42 in the second half to secure the Blazer win.

“Free throw shooting was slightly better, but is still a concern,” Baker said. “We shot the ball better and handled the end of game situations much better.”

Three Blazers were in double-figures, led by Bryan Lemmon’s 18 points, which he paired with six boards. Malm was not far behind, with 17 points and five rebounds of his own. Jared Lemmon tallied a team-high eight rebounds and poured in 13 points. Firminhac filled his stat line with eight points and five boards.

“Sam Firminhac came off the bench and was really a factor scoring eight points and pulling down five boards,” Baker said.

Rounding out the scoring, Stitt had four points and Moorehouse added another three. The duo had three rebounds apiece. Devin Flores and Josh Posten combined for three points.

Torrington now sits at 4-4 on the season after the 1-2 weekend over break. The Blazers return to action Friday on the road when they play Newcastle at 7 p.m.
