Blazers fifth at bonanza

CHEYENNE – The Torrington Trailblazers took fifth at the Bison Bonanza Friday after going 3-2 in team duals at Cheyenne Central, after the event was moved from Cheyenne South due to power issues.

“Having this tournament is a huge advantage,” coach Doyle Meyer said of the event during winter break. “We’ve got only eight teams here. It just keeps the competitiveness there. Some teams don’t compete and those kids lose that one week of not doing anything. We are working and working and we stress to the kids you’re doing more than most.”

Starting at 220 pounds to open the bonanza, Sebastian Doucette was pinned at the 1:58 mark against Tanner Martin. Heavyweight Brandon Bennick lost to Casey Pushchak via pin in the first period. The Blazers were open at 106 so Cheyenne East’s Landon Trujillo found himself in the Blazer lineup, although Torrington automatically received a loss at the weight. D.J. Mackey was the next Blazer to take the mat, losing to 113-pounder Adam Roberts via an 8-4 decision.

After a double forfeit at 120 pounds, Quentin Meyer (126) picked up a win with Cheyenne South’s Uriah Huff taking the mat for Central. Rock Spring’s Trevor Allred took the mat for Torrington at 132 pounds.

“Outstanding performers were by far Jacob Polkowske and Austin Fox,” Meyer said. “They both went 5-0 on the day. Tristen Kingsley also went 4-1. They’re progressing very, very well.”

At 160 pounds, Casey Britton was close to going the distance, suffering a loss via pin against Nathan Lundberg with eight seconds left on the clock. Chase Dominguez (170) lasted all six minutes, losing 7-6 against Andrew Gauthier. Josh Kingsley (182) fell via a 13-4 major decision against Decker Mattimoe, before Jakob Brott pinned Val Herd 40 seconds into the match to close out the 40-24 dual.

Torrington vs. Cheyenne South

The Blazers return to competitive action this weekend, heading to the Shane Shatto Memorial Invitational in Douglas. Action starts at 12 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

“We’re progressing right where we need to be. We’re not taking steps back and we are progressing but it’s going to be a process to get there,” Meyer said.
