Blazers battle wind for fifth and seventh place

CHEYENNE – Despite windy conditions Thursday at the Okie Blanchard Invitational in Cheyenne, the Torrington Trailblazer boys finished fifth in the team standings, while the Lady Blazers took seventh.

Bryan Lemmon had a solid day for the Blazers, taking the top spot in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 5 inches. He also snagged the silver in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.55 seconds. Casey Britton joined Lemmon in the high jump and finished inside the top-eight, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches to take eighth.

In other field events, Cade Schwartzkopf took seventh in the pole vault with a 10-foot, 6-inch effort.

Torrington’s throwers had a successful day as well. Nathaniel Woodruff picked up a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 9 inches. Corbin Harris was not far behind, finishing eighth with a 116-foot, 7-inch effort. In the shot put, Harris had the edge over Woodruff, taking fifth with a put of 45 feet, 6.25 inches. Woodruff finished eighth with a throw of 42 feet, 9.5 inches.

In the running events, Pake Haun had the best finish for Torrington, taking third in the 3200-meter run, clocking a time of 11:47.25. Aaron Borger was the other Blazer to place in a distance event, snagging fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:06.06.

Borger also took fourth (53.90 seconds) in the 400, where three Blazers placed in the top-eight. Bo Moorehouse took seventh in the event with a time of 54.23 seconds, while Matthew Garcia’s time of 55.55 seconds earned him eighth.

Moorehouse finished fourth in the 200 as well, turning in a time of 24.34 seconds. Brett Posten finished seventh in the 200, with a time of 25.15 seconds.

The Blazer boys picked up 61 points to finish fifth in the team standings. Laramie snagged the top spot with 143 points, while Kelly Walsh (115.5) and Cheyenne East (98) rounded out the top-three. The JV boys finished eighth in the JV team standings with 23 points.

Girls

Nakalyn Garner had the best finish for the Lady Blazers, and she tied the Torrington High School record in the process. Her 9-foot, 6-inch effort in the pole vault earned her second. Also in the pole vault, Onalise Albaugh cleared 8 feet to take sixth and Katie Wiford earned seventh after getting over 7 feet, 6 inches.

Torrington’s 400-meter relay team finished sixth with a time of 53.78 seconds. In the 1600-meter sprint medley, Hailey Boslay, Emily McGaugh, HeLena McGaugh and Adia Sherbeyn linked up for a third-place finish, clocking a time of 4:56.46.

Latosha Wiford had a successful day on the track. She finished the 400 in 1:05.27, which put her in the fourth spot. In the 200, she finished eighth with a time of 29.36 seconds.

The Lady Blazers amassed 28 team points to finish seventh in the team standings, sandwiched between Douglas (32) and Rawlins (25). Kelly Walsh took the top spot with 154 team points, edging out Cheyenne Central’s 139.5 points. Laramie finished third with 112.5 points. In the JV team race, Torrington finished 11th with two points.

The Blazers and Lady Blazers return to action Friday at the Douglas Invitational, before competing in the Best in the West Meet in Scottsbluff, Neb. on Tuesday.
