Blazer wrestling wins Silver Bracket at Battle of the Bighorns

WORLAND – The Torrington High School wrestling team went 4-2 over the weekend at the 2022 Battle of the Big Horns hosted by Worland High School.

The four wins propelled the Blazers to the Silver Bracket championship on Saturday of the dual format tournament.

The only two losses of the weekend came in the first two duals of the weekend.

Torrington fell to Cody 56-24 and to Pinedale 51-24. Cody went on to win the Gold Bracket championship, while Pinedale was the bracket’s runner-up.

Against Cody, Barrett Eichenberger (126 pounds), Reece Grubbs (132), Colby Sandusky (138) and Matthew Hellus (182) picked up wins for the Blazers.

In the second round, Ty Albaugh (120) and Grubbs gave the Blazers an early 12-6 lead, but Pinedale rattled off four straight wins before Bryce Hager (170) and Hellus scored a couple pins.

In the final round of pool matches, Torrington got a 36-33 win over Greybull/Riverside.

Eichenberger, Sandusky, Brendan Woodard (145), Hager, Chase Graves (285) and Tyler Nicolay got wins for the Blazers.

With a 1-2 pool record, the Blazers ended up in the silver bracket.

The Blazers opened the bracket portion of the tournament with a 57-21 victory over the Powell Panthers.

Powell won the first match of the dual at 106 pounds, but Nicolay got a pin at 113 pounds. It was the first of 10 straight wins for the Blazers.

Albaugh, Eichenberger, Grubbs, Sandusky, Woodard, Kaden Romig (152), JR Ruiz (160), Hager and Hellus also picked up wins for Torrington.

In the semifinal round, the Blazers defeated Lander Valley 48-33.

Nicolay picked up a pin in 1 minute, 4 seconds, and it was the first of five pins to begin the dual for the Blazers as Albaugh, Eichenberger, Grubbs, Sandusky, Ruiz and Hellus also got wins for the Blazers.

In the championship dual, Torrington defeated Riverton 42-33.

The Blazers won the first six matches of the dual.

Albaugh, Eichenberger, Grubbs, Sandusky, Woodard and Romig got wins to begin the championship match. Riverton won the next six matches before Nicolay capped off the dual with a fall in the second period.

Torrington returns to the mat on Tuesday, Jan. 3 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The dual with the Bearcats is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
