Blazer trio places at Shane Shatto Memorial

DOUGLAS – Quentin Meyer, Jacob Polkowske and Brandon Bennick led the Torrington Blazer wrestling team at the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament in Douglas.

The trio were the lone medalists for the Blazers, and as a team, Torrington finished 14th with 69 points. Kelly Walsh won the tournament with 215 points, while Thunder Basin was second with 178. Cheyenne East was third with 160 in the 24-team event.

Blazer trio places at Shane Shatto Memorial

DOUGLAS – Quentin Meyer, Jacob Polkowske and Brandon Bennick led the Torrington Blazer wrestling team at the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament in Douglas.

The trio were the lone medalists for the Blazers, and as a team, Torrington finished 14th with 69 points. Kelly Walsh won the tournament with 215 points, while Thunder Basin was second with 178. Cheyenne East was third with 160 in the 24-team event.

All three wrestlers reached the semifinal round.

Both Polkowske and Bennick ended the weekend with wins, finishing third in their respective weight classes.

Polkowske reached the semifinal round of the 160-pound bracket before suffering his first loss by a 2-1 decision.

However, Polkowske rebounded to pick up a fall in the consolation semifinal and an 11-4 decision in the third-place match of Quinn Heyneman of Sheridan.

In the heavyweight division, Bennick also reached the semifinal round before losing in a 7-1 decision.

Bennick bounced back with a fall and a 1-0 decision victory over Thomas Parke of Natrona County.

At 126, Meyer was pinned in the semifinal round and lost by a technical fall in the consolation semifinal, dropping him to the fifth-place match.

In Meyer’s final match of the weekend, he fell to Noah Fitzgerald of Castle View, Colo. by a 1-0 decision.

Tristen Kinglsey (2-2), Casey Britton (3-2), Josh Kingsley (1-2) and Gabe Mitchell (2-2) also picked up wins for the Blazers at the two-day tournament.

Torrington will host the annual Blazers Duals on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 9 a.m. at Willi Gym. Buffalo, Burns-Pine Bluffs, Glenrock, Laramie, Newcastle-Upton, Niobrara County and Wheatland will join the Blazers for the day-long tournament.
