TORRINGTON – After finishing third in the 3A Southeast conference last year, the Torrington Lady Trailblazers will be looking to improve their seeding this year with hopes to make it to the state tournament.
Torrington started the year on a skid, falling in their first seven games to open the season. Three of its losses came by a one-goal differential and an additional game was lost in extra time. The Lady Blazers suffered two conference losses in the first three games of the year, including a 2-0 extra time loss to Lander, so Torrington got one conference point in the standings.
In Green River, the Lady Blazers secured a 1-0 win over Newcastle for the first win of the year, but went on to fall in their next five contests. Another matchup against Newcastle later in the season gave Torrington a 4-3 win, putting the team at 2-12.
To close out the regular season, Torrington had two conference games, falling in both. Their 1-0 loss against Rawlins to close out the regular season came in extra time handed Torrington another point in the conference standings.
The Lady Blazers’ two points in the conference standings were not enough to overtake Lander, who went 4-0 in the conference, or Rawlins, with a 2-2 mark in the 3A Southeast.
As the third seed in the conference, Torrington had to go to the qualifying round, where it played Riverton, the second seed from the southwest, falling 3-2 and ending the Lady Blazers’ season.
Playing in a conference with two teams that reached the state tournament, including Lander who finished fourth in Sheridan, is not an easy task. If the Lady Blazers can secure a conference win or two against two tough opponents, they could pave an easier path to the state tournament this year.
Torrington kicks off its season on the road Tuesday against Douglas. The Lady Bearcats went 8-8 a season ago.
