After Banner Health Community Hospital chief financial officer Steve Smith stepped down in January, the nationwide search was on to fill the position. Dale Spencer, formerly of Carolinas HealthCare System, was hired as CFO late last month.
A West Virginia native and West Virginia State University graduate, Spencer has been working in small hospital management and healthcare for 18 years in hospitals in both West Virginia and North Carolina before moving to Torrington.
Presently looking for a home within the city and settling in to his new position, Spencer is getting to know the community and the needs to be addressed at the hospital.
“Right now, it’s kind of hard to address (company issues),” he said. Still within his first month of employment with Community Hospital, Spencer stated he’s still in his “sponge period,” trying to absorb as much information as he can to better serve the public.
Although he is acquainting himself with the hospital’s concerns, Spencer believes priority should be given to company stability.
Within the past year, several of the hospital’s high officials stepped down; former chief of nursing (CNO) Jeanie Martindale, former CEO Brenda Sturm and Smith all left within 2010.
“The key right now is to bring in leadership that will bring stability to the hospital,” he said.
