Lady Blazers earn trip to state

The Torrington girls basketball team earned their fifth straight trip to the 2010 Wyoming State 3A/4A Basketball Championships with a 54-46 victory over Thermopolis Saturday in loser-out competition of the 3A East Regional in Douglas.

Torrington opened the tournament with a victory over Glenrock Thursday and fell to eventual champion Buffalo (65-35) Friday before getting past the Bobcats to secure a spot in this weekend’s state championships in Casper.

The Lady Blazers will be the No. 4 seed from the east after falling to Wheatland (58-50) in Saturday’s consolation finals.

Three individuals scored in double-figures in Torrington’s eight-point victory over Thermopolis with sophomore Mikayla Brower’s 16 points leading the way.

The Blazers connected on 19-of-53 shots from the floor and 14-of-23 from the free throw line.

Brower hit 8-of-12 from the charity stripe and added six steals, five rebounds and three assists to go with her game-high 16 points while junior Emily Madden had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Courtney Swanson had 10 points while Matty Jolovich tallied eight points and four rebounds.

Senior Danielle Werner contributed three points and four rebounds while Kayla Matlock and Brooke Paules added two points apiece.

Against Wheatland, the Lady Blazers were 15-of-44 from the field and 17-of-24 from the free throw line while Brower’s 15 points led the way.

The sophomore was 2-for-2 from three-point range and 5-of-7 from the free throw line and added two assists and two rebounds. Madden had nine points, four rebounds and three assists while Jolovich had five points, four rebounds and three assists and Swanson added five points and two assists.

Paules contributed four points, three assists and two rebounds while Shai Schaefer and Werner added three points and two rebounds apiece. Sammie Schlager, Jenny Rife and Matlock had two points apiece for Torrington.

In the Blazers’ loss to Buffalo, Brower notched 11 points and three boards while Paules had six points, five rebounds and two steals. Jolovich added four points and four rebounds while Matlock, Werner, Madden and Swanson had three points apiece and Schaefer had two points.

Torrington hit just 10-of-54 shots from the floor and 14-of-26 from the charity stripe.

The Blazers will play Jackson Hole Thursday in first round action at the Casper Events Center at 6 p.m.
