Grass fire threat high this year

File - Grass fires have occurred nearly every day as the summer heats up, but landowners can take several steps to try to protect their property.

TORRINGTON – The diverse landscapes of the western United States makes for some of the most poignant and beautiful scenery in the world, but it also has a history of some of the most destructive wildfires in the world.

This summer marks the 65th anniversary of the Mann Gulch fire near Helena, Mont., in which 13 smokejumpers died when the fire “blew up,” consuming, according to post-fire studies, 3,000 acres in approximately 10 minutes.
