Laura Emelia Forsberg Swanson

LINGLE – Laura Emelia Forsberg Swanson, 98, of Lingle, died Aug. 10, 2013 in Lingle. She was a Craig, Colo. resident from 1937 to 2006.

She was born Feb. 4, 1915 to Emil and Laura Blixt Forsberg in Stockdale, Kan. in a farm house. Three weeks after she was born, her mother passed away, leaving Laura, her 2-year-old sister Violet and a grief-stricken father.

She was then cared for by aunts and uncles in Kansas until she was 10 years old. Her father then remarried, and the family moved to Denver.

She graduated from West High School, Colorado Women’s College and Colorado Teacher’s College in Greeley, Colo. Upon graduation, she accepted a fifth-grade and sixth-grade teaching position in Craig. She taught for 29 years in the Moffat County school system.

She married George E. Swanson on May 27, 1939 in Hamilton, Colo. at a Sunday school picnic. They farmed at Hamilton and Haydon, Colo., and also for one year in Riley County, Kan.

During confirmation classes in the Evangelical Mission Covenant Church, she believed the scriptures and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord. She was very active in church ministries throughout her life.

She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Gideon Auxiliary. She was a Craig hospital auxiliary volunteer. She liked to crochet blankets and gave one to each of her children and grandchildren. She submitted many needlework projects and baked items for the Moffat County Fair.

In 2006, Laura and George moved to Lingle to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Dick Young.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; step-mother Edith Lindstrom Forsberg; her sister, Violet Bartha; two great grandsons, Joshua and Jacob Halley; and five unborn great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Dick Young of Lingle, Joyce and Peter Van Dorn of Longmont, Colo., and Dorothy Jackson of Colorado Springs Colo.; six grandchildren, Rod and Julie Young, Rachel and Jeff Halley, Kari and Carl Nelson, Doug and Janelle Van Dorn, Marsha and Dave Burke and Stephen Van Dorn; 14 great grandchildren, Rebecca Young Decker and husband Jordan, Anna Young, Laura and Reece Halley, Franklin, Carlson and Emelia Nelson, Alesha, Breanna, Annika and Elianna Van Dorn, and Noah, Evan and Kyle Burke.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Yampa Valley Baptist Church in Craig, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
