Letter to the editor: A protest of sales tax on Internet purchases

Modified: Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Some of you may be aware of Senate Bill 743, the Market Fairness Act, sponsored by our own Sen. Mike Enzi. This bill would require Internet and mail-order companies to collect sales tax from their customers.

The purported reason is that this would somehow level the playing field and that we would all start shopping locally rather than on the Internet. Mr. Enzi has apparently sponsored this bill with little, if any, support, from the voters who elected him to office. What voter would support a bill that would require them to pay more taxes?

I occasionally order items from companies advertising on the Internet and do not consider the issue that I donít have to pay sales tax. Even though I donít pay sales tax, I do pay shipping and handling, which can be significant.

On a recent order, the shipping and handling charges were over $22! Where were the savings? I order items off of the Internet simply because they may not be available locally or simply because it is my right to spend the money that I earned wherever I want! I donít need to be coerced by my elected officials!

Enzi needs to consider what his constituents want and not what the small business lobby groups that he is heavily influenced by want. The question also arises as to what state should be entitled to this sales tax revenue? If I purchase something from a company in Florida, why should Wyoming receive the sales tax for this?

The longer Enzi is in office, the more he distances himself from his constituents. Contact Enzi and let him know that you are opposed to any new taxes regardless! You can contact him at his website or at one of his state offices. Also, contact Sen. John Barrasso on this issue. This is an opportunity to make your views known on this very important issue.
