Dennis “Denny” James Reffalt

Modified: Wednesday, Apr 10th, 2013

Died April 6, 2013

TORRINGTON – Dennis “Denny” James Reffalt, 57, ended his battle with leukemia on the evening of April 6. Dennis was born in Torrington to A.D. “Tootie” Reffalt and JoAnne (Tenney) Reffalt.

Denny attended school in Guernsey and graduated in 1974. He was active in football, basketball, track and rodeo. Dennis was a very talented athlete and was selected to play in the first Shrine Bowl.

Following high school, Denny attended college at the University of Wyoming (UW) where he was a member of the UW football and rodeo teams. After attending college, he followed in the footsteps of his father and went to work welding in the oil fields. Denny was a dedicated man who worked his way up into various positions in the oil field.

On May 16, 1981, he married his “best friend” in Esterbrook. Dennis was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He spent the majority of his time working in the oil fields and on his parent’s farm.

However, when he wasn’t working, you could find him in his boat or in a hunting blind. Although he loved hunting many different types of animals, Dennis had an affinity for elk. He was a man with a true and steadfast appreciation for the great outdoors.

Denny was diagnosed with leukemia on Oct. 25, 2012 and spent the next few weeks in Denver undergoing chemotherapy. After chemo, he returned to work at L & L Enterprises in Douglas. Dennis had a strong work ethic, often being the first one to the shop in the morning and the last one to leave the job for the day.

Honesty was always his policy, and he would be the first one to take care of a stray animal or help someone in need, especially children. Denny wore many hats, but his favorite title was “Poppy.” He was a devoted, fun and loving grandfather to his three grandchildren.

Dennis will be loved forever, and his memory will remain, as he will live on in our hearts forever. Dennis was preceded in death by his grandson, Corbin James Reffalt; his niece, Mackenzie Coy Reffalt; and his father, Tootie Reffalt.

He is survived by his wife, Cody Shain Reffalt; his mother, JoAnne Reffalt; his son, Colter James Reffalt; his daughter, Jessica (Damien) Reffalt-Herrera; his brother, Bill (Jennifer) Reffalt; his sister, Tammy (Ken) Reeves; his nephews, Scott (Sunny) Fleck, Kyle (Jordan) Fleck; Ryan, Syler, Crais and Carter Fleck and Tate Stoneking; his nieces, Billie Jo (Charlie) Stoneking, Aubrey Frasier, Devon Baldwin, MaCoyia, Emma Stoneking, Lily and Makayla Fleck; and “Poppy’s girls,” his granddaughters Zoleigh Coy Reffalt and Brianna Lee Herrera, as well as many close family friends.

As per his wishes, his remains have been cremated. Please join the family in fulfilling his last wishes by spreading his ashes via helium balloons and shotgun fire. Please feel free to bring your guns to help us scatter his ashes in this unique way on Friday, April 12 at 4 p.m. at 80 Airport Road in Guernsey.

A celebration of life dinner will follow at Crazy Tony’s in Guernsey. Please join us in remembering Denny. The family would like to send a special “thank you!” to all of the wonderful staff at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, Colo.

A memorial fund has been set up in Dennis’s name, and donations can be sent to 90407 CR 36 Minatare, NE 69356. A donation will be made to the Douglas Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in Dennis’s name.
