TORRINGTON – Memorial services for John R. Nielsen, 60, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013 at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Cederholm officiating.
John died March 4, 2013, and cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at a later date in Lyons, Neb. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home, and friends may send condolences to the family at www.colyerfuneralhome.com.
John was born Aug. 30, 1952 in Oakland, Neb., the son of Jack and Betty Lou (Tenney) Nielsen. He grew up on a farm outside of Lyons and attended school in Lyons, graduating there in 1970. He worked various jobs in the area before joining the U.S. Marines in 1971.
After his honorable discharge, he came back to the Lyons area where he married Nola Johnson. They were later divorced. He worked as a mechanic for John Deere and then attended Northeast Technical Community College and graduated there in 1983. John worked construction for a short time before starting work for NPPD. He moved to Torrington in 1997, where he worked for the city of Torrington as a electrical lineman.
John enjoyed photography, building computers and was a Harley Davidson enthusiast. He was very mechanically and electronically inclined and had all the latest electronic gadgets. He was a member of the Nation Rifle Association and a past member of the American Legion.
John is survived by two daughters, Rachael Nielsen of Gillette, and Jamie Nielsen of Whitney, Neb.; a sister, Jerrianne Schreiner and her husband Milton of Omaha, Neb.; his father, Jack Nielsen of Lyons; two step-daughters, Shannon Barron and Kelly Turnbull, both of Chadron, Neb.; and two grandchildren, Alayna Rudloff and Jack Rudloff. He was preceded in death by his mother and two brothers, Michael and Mark.
