Vergie was born April 1, 1932 in Nodaway County, Mo. to Harvey and Goldie (Force) Overman. When she was 2 years old, the family moved to a homestead north of Lance Creek, Wyo. They lived there for several years.
In 1943, they moved to Torrington, where Vergie spent her teenage years. In the late 1950s, she married Floyd Rathbun. They enjoyed hunting and fishing together. In 1964, they traveled to Alaska on a hunting trip where Vergie bagged a beautiful caribou in full velvet. He was her pride and joy. She was also an avid rock hound.
Many years later, Floyd and Vergie divorced. In 1980, she went to work for King’s Inn where she met many new friends and employees. She worked there until ill health forced her retirement in the early 1990s.
Vergie was an avid painted quilt maker. She made numerous themed quilts for many family members. She was also singer Marty Robbins’ No. 1 fan. She even made and dedicated a painted quilt to his foundation upon his death in 1982.
Vergie is survived by her two sisters, Frances Dodson of Torrington, and Jo Adkins of Sutherland, Neb.; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Norma Neifert; brother Harvey J. Overman; nephew David Hale; and niece Mary (Hale) Meachum. The family wishes a special thank you to Kay Ramsey.
