TORRINGTON – Funeral services for Ellen O. Smith, 92, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Curtis Hill officiating.

Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Ellen died Jan. 8, 2013 at the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard, Neb. Memorials may be made to either the Chimney Rock Villa or the Western History Library at Eastern Wyoming College.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at the church briefly prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home, and friends may send condolences to the family at www.colyerfuneralhome.com.

Ellen was born March 6, 1920 in Gering, Neb. the daughter of Arthur and Pauline (Gilg) Otto. She grew up and attended rural schools in Goshen County and graduated Torrington High School in 1937.

She then attended the University of Wyoming where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school at rural schools in Goshen County, among them Hoit, Section and Red Cloud, and also two years at LaGrange. She married George “Mack” Smith on May 22, 1942 in Bridgeport, Neb. They farmed and ranched southwest of Yoder. She lived on the ranch until December of 2011 when she entered the Chimney Rock Villa.

Ellen enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, cooking and entertaining family and hunters that came to her house. She was a charter member of the Wyoming and Goshen County Historical Societies and volunteered for many years at the Homesteader’s Museum.

Ellen is survived by three sons, Jerry Smith and his wife Dianna of Yoder, Stan Smith and his wife Adele of Torrington, and Royce Smith and his wife Mary of Buffalo; a daughter Pat Munn of Torrington; a sister Martha Greene of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother Paul Otto of Kearney, Neb; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Mack; two brothers; two sisters; and a grandson.
