VETERAN – An un-fortunate hunting accident last season might have put an end to 12-year-old Cade Herring’s big game hunting dreams for many seasons to come.

A 20-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged when Herring handed the gun to a friend as they attempted go down an embankment. The blast cost him the thumb and pinky on his left hand.

But according to Boone Herring, Cade’s father, with the help of friends and family, Cade never lost his hunting desire.

“The accident happened on Dec. 9, 2011. Right after the first of the year, he had a check-up, and his first question for the doctor was, ‘When can I hunt again?’”

Shortly after he got the OK from his doctor, Cade participated in the “Tom Harpstreith Memorial Youth Goose Hunt.”

“The people involved in that hunt were great,” said Boone. “Not only were they great to Cade, but to all the kids that were involved.”

With the help of his grandfather, Larry Merrill, Cade was able to bag his first deer this year near Chadron, Neb. about two weeks ago.

“We spotted him on this hill and had to do a stalk,” Cade happily shared. “He was 75 to 100 yards away when I shot him. He is a four-by-five if you count the brow tines. He was 25-inches wide, and I’ll probably have the horns mounted.”

Though remembering the hunt still makes Cade excited, there is one thing he hopes everyone will remember when out hunting; “I still love to hunt,” Cade said, “but the biggest thing to get across to everyone is to treat every gun like a loaded gun.”

Truer words have never been spoken, especially by a 12-year-old who knows firsthand the value of his own advice.
