TORRINGTON – The rhythmic rapping of a hammer in Steve Haden’s work-worn hands was audible as a small but attentive audience watched. He had imprinted a design on a formerly blank piece of leather.
Then, the patter really began to take shape. Haden guided a swivel knife, a sharp blade with a handle resembling a writing instrument, along the lines he set for himself. He set aside the knife and, reaching into a toolbelt crowded with thin, metallic cylinders, selected two small tools and his hammer. Within a few minutes, the design was nearly complete, and a flower appeared on the leather.
