Letter to the editor: Working together to ‘form a more perfect union’

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 7th, 2012

“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, provide for the general welfare and to secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity; do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America.”

Those are the words that come to mind when we view the government response to Hurricane Sandy or the wildfires or a salmonella outbreak. And even as Mitt Romney and his fellow billionaires call to privatize FEMA so that international firms can make money from our disasters, we can see that a unified government system can bring together our citizens to fight any emergency. This is why the National Guard was formed – to safeguard our citizens at home – not to guard private oil pipelines abroad.

The Great Depression was caused by a combination of ignorance, greed and natural forces. We put financial safeguards in place for the stock market; we formed the FDIC, not only to safeguard our own bank accounts but also to encourage people to put money back to help businesses and communities.

The farm programs were instituted not only to help farmers survive but to ensure a safe food supply for our people and to keep land in production for future generations.

We built a strong society and provided for health care and education for all of us. But as the business, energy production and food systems became more international, the money to be made was from cheap labor and poor environmental safeguards overseas.

We went into the ‘90s with ZERO national debt and were not paying attention as financial safeguards on Wall Street were gutted and all of our money, stocks, bonds, pensions and private bank accounts were dumped into one big pot for big-wig traders to play with. They made billions from the housing market even as we lost our houses, and they gave each other million dollar bonuses as we all lost our savings and 401Ks.

After 9/11, the military became a private army – all of our service operations such as food, latrines and road building became jobs for international companies. As our young men and women die and are maimed by war, it has become a profit making bonanza for big billionaires.

Privatizing has ruined the post office and it will ruin Social Security. Vouchering Medicare will cause even more chaos and less available health care for seniors.

Gutting aid to education and nutrition programs will not help our workforce. The goal is to lower our living standards so that we are content to work for slave labor like the Chinese. We fight over little things and ignore the fact that international billionaires are funding this election. The Tea Party, funded by the Neo-Nazi Koch brothers, blocked the Farm Bill in the House, but somehow we are supposed to blame “liberals” for the lack of drought relief.

The Pledge we say, “One Nation, under God, Indivisible, with liberty and justice for All,” says it all.

We are the government – all of us. We may not look alike, or even like each other, but our survival depends on our fellow citizens not on some foreign corporation hiding in the Cayman Islands.
