TORRINGTON – No services are planned at this time for Royce A. McElhaney, 86, who died of a stroke on Oct. 30, 2012 at Community Hospital in Torrington. Cremation has taken place. Those who wish to may make contributions in Royce’s memory to the American Cancer Society. The Colyer Funeral Home assisted the family with the cremation arrangements.
Royce was born June 2, 1926 in Torrington the son of Vern and Alta (Vandel) McElhaney. He was raised in Torrington and graduated from Torrington High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was assigned to the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged after the war. He married Avice Garnick in 1947 and worked at several ranches in Goshen County. They divorced, and Royce married Margo Fisher on Jan. 28, 1952 in Edgemont, S.D. He worked as an ammunition inspector at multiple army depots both inside the United States and overseas before moving to Herlong, Calif. in 1960. He retired from Sierra Army Depot in Herlong in 1980. Royce and Margo then lived in Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota and Oregon, spending many years wintering in Bouse, Ariz. Royce lived in Maryland for a year before returning to Torrington in July 2011 and moving into Evergreen Court boarding home and the Goshen Care Center.
Royce was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lassen Janesville Lodge No. 149 in Susanville, Calif., a longtime member of the Honey Lake Valley Riders in Susanville, as well as the Lassen County Sheriff’s Posse.
Royce is survived by his brother, Elmer McElhaney of Torrington; daughters Linda Bray, of Douglas, and Becki Dobyns of Ellicott City, Md.; a nephew James McElhaney of Torrington, who was very attentive as his health waned; three grandchildren, Avice, Hawk and Erin; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margo in 2006 and a sister, Colleen Holler.
