TORRINGTON – Benny Lee Martinez, 73, of Laramie, died Sept. 21 at his home.
Benny was born on Dec. 26, 1938, in Torrington to Lee and Marie (Salaz) Martinez.
While attending high school in Lingle-Fort Laramie, Benny played on the basketball team and was ranked as a top-five player in the state and was on the track team receiving several ribbons. He graduated from Lingle-Fort Laramie High School in 1957. He loved sports and enjoyed watching sport events on television.
Benny truly enjoyed fishing, especially in Snowy Range with his buddies. He enjoyed reading, especially news, current events, sports, the Laramie Boomerang and Wyoming Life Magazine articles.
After graduation, Benny came to Laramie. He was headed to Utah to work in the mines. His dad convinced him to stay in Laramie, and he soon was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad on Sept. 18, 1957. Benny retired after 43 years with UP in November 2000.
By his first marriage, Benny had a daughter, Reñee. He married Barbara Walters in Laramie on July 1, 1972, a marriage of 40 years.
Benny liked to travel and especially to visit relatives in New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. He knew all his relatives by name and never forgot them.
Benny was passionate about cars. He knew all about cars, the years, models and makes. He took good care of his Monte Carlo and was seen cruising Laramie. Benny was a true, loyal person. He will be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Martinez, of Laramie; daughter, Reñee Hill, of Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren: Imami Christian, Aaron and Christian Hill; three great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Martinez; sisters, Cleo Martinez, of Aurora, and Ezmeralda Weber, of Denver; several nieces and nephews; aunts, Amalia Romero, of Denver, Oralia Vigil, of Holman, N.M., and Lupe Martinez, of Kearns, Utah.
Benny was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Marie Martinez.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Torrington with Father Ray Moss officiating.
Casket bearers are Leroy Vigil, Johnny Vigil, Robert Vigil, Robert Soper, Dennis Sanchez and Bruno Flores.
