TORRINGTON – About 30 firefighters were on the scene of a coal fire at the Western Sugar Cooperative plant in Torrington on Sunday afternoon.
Torrington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeremy Wardell said the fire started when coal on an elevator leading to the factory’s boilers was heated. The TVFD called in the Yoder Volunteer Fire Department for mutual aid. The fire took about three hours to extinguish.
There were no injuries. Wardell said the firefighters were familiar with how to handle the fire due to a similar incident several years ago.
