Web-first update: Torrington residents face arson charges

Modified: Thursday, Jun 28th, 2012

TORRINGTON – Two Torrington residents have been arrested in connection with the Guernsey State Park fire that scorched about 2,600 acres.

Capt. Bryan Morehouse of the Goshen County Sheriff’s Department said deputies arrested Stephenie Ann Schultz, 36, and Thomas Dean Pierson, 36, on Tuesday afternoon on Platte County warrants for arson.

Schultz and Pierson were allegedly involved in a fire that started in Guernsey State Park June 9. About 600 park visitors were evacuated as were residents in Hartville. One cabin was destroyed in the blaze; no fatalities or injuries were reported.

Guernsey State Park reopened June 15; the fire was 100 percent contained and mostly out by then. Park visitors were allowed into unburned areas, according to an Associated Press report.
