SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Torrington Tiger American Legion baseball team finished 2-2 last weekend at the Spearfish Post 164 tournament.
The Tigers fell to Yankston, S.D., 11-2 in the first game of the tournament.
The Tigers only managed four hits and committed four errors in the run ruled shortened game.
Yankston scored five runs in the top of the second inning, two in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Torrington’s Austin Murphy led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to center field. Murphy came around to score off a Gordon Kautz single.
A Mark McKee RBI double in the bottom of the fifth scored Chrystian Saucedo.
Starting pitcher R.J. Lara went the distance for the Tigers walking three, while striking out two. The loss was his first of the season.
The Tigers faced off against the host Spearfish Post 164 next.
Lara’s RBI double in the first inning gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and they never relinquished the lead.
McKee, Kautz and Lara each picked up two hits in the 4-3 victory.
In top of the fourth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases with two out, and Kautz, the starting pitcher, helped his pitching effort by singling to left field scoring Brock Youtz and Saucedo to take a 4-1 lead.
The Tigers held on to the victory despite giving up one run in the sixth and seventh innings and committing three errors in the game.
Kautz went seven innings fanning five batters, while walking four.
The win was the first of the season for Kautz, who now is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA.
The Tigers dropped their only game on Saturday 7-4 to the Billings Halos.
