EWC’s Winchell finishes third at CNFR

Posted: Wednesday, Jun 20th, 2012

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College Rodeo team member Shelby Winchell finished third in the nation in the goat tying at the College National Finals Rodeo held June 10-16 in Casper.

Winchell, from Scottsbluff, Neb., qualified for the CNFR by finishing second in the Central Rocky Mountain Region for the 2011-12 season.

At the CNFR, each contestant competes in three rounds. The top 12 in each event qualify for the short round and the national champions are determined by the best time or score on four rounds.

Winchell won the short round with a 6.1 second run.

“It was a phenomenal run,” coach Jake Clark said. “It was the fastest time of the 2012 CNFR.”

In the first round, Winchell split second place with a 6.7 second run. In the second round, she had a 6.8 second run and split fifth in the round. In the third round, Winchell made an 8.0 second run. Winchell finished third in the nation with a four round time of 27.6 seconds.

“Shelby works so hard, and it paid off for her,” Clark said. “She is a very disciplined and dedicated student athlete. Her focus and determination are an incredible asset.”
