At the Nov. 13 GCSD No. 1 Board meeting, Trustee Jeff McClun was publicly chastised by Vice Chairman Charlie Harshberger with re-elected Trustees Chair Rob Branham and Linda Johnson.
Comments on McClun’s personal letter to the local paper printed Nov. 7 (one day after election).
Charlie asked what Jeff’s intent was by printing his comments. Branham said the election is over, and the board can discuss these issues during work sessions. Branham spoke on how a school board needs to function and how we have to work together for the kids. Linda referenced the board governances and said Jeff was in violation of his authority.
The letter written was of personal opinion, not on behalf of the board. He is guaranteed that right by the First Amendment. The letter in no way violated the Governances Code of Conduct. The verbal lashing, however, that Jeff endured, violated 2C of the code of conduct. Shame on you, Charlie, Rob and Linda! I am concerned about the oath I will be taking on Nov. 19. As a trustee, I will not tolerate bullying or intimidation by other members or the administration.
We want a safe and secure setting for our students, but before the district can ensure that, we first need to set the model in the board room. Code 2C states members will not publicly express individual negative judgments about the superintendent, board members or staff. Any such judgments of superintendent, board members or staff should only be made when the board is meeting in executive session.
