Letter to the editor: Donít put political party above all

Posted: Wednesday, Oct 3rd, 2012

ďPresident Barack Obama did not steal $716 billion from Medicare to support the Affordable Care Act. The program is not being gutted. The cuts we are hearing about will come from eliminating a massive subsidy to private insurers and gradually reduce the rate of growth in payments to some providers. These changes, while not catastrophic for Medicare, are certainly newsworthy.Ē Bill Marsh, Torrington Telegram, Sept. 26, 2012.

Who is Mr. Marsh trying to kid? When did a government program slash costs?

Now that we have it, we are stuck with Medicare, but look at the cost. The administration of that program has cost us, not saved us money. Neither has it provided better care. There are thousands, if not millions, who will not be covered under the Affordable Care Act.

Obama Care will not only increase costs according to his own administration, but seniors, in particular, will be at a greater disadvantage. Surely a non-medical panel in Washington will have seniorsí best interests at heart.

Obama Care is not only about health care, which it will not improve, it is about taking more of our freedoms to choose for ourselves. Obama Care is only the tip of the iceberg if Obama is re-elected.

Have you noticed the cost of gasoline? Utilities? The assault on coal production? This is a list that could go on and on. If Obama is re-elected, we may have to have African nations send us money.

If you lean toward socialism, then Obama is your man. The Sovietí system was a winner, as are the left-leaning European countries today, arenít they?

If you think freedoms will increase under a socialistic system, call to mind the National Socialist German Workers Party, aka Nazi party. That worked out well. Socialism does free one from thinking. Those smart people in Washington will happily think life for you.

Even if you are convinced that your presidential vote does not count, get the facts about issues local and national and vote. If you donít have a clue, stay home. If you need someone to run your life for you, pick someone closer to home; politicians are concerned for your vote, not your welfare.
