The Torrington wrestling squad captured five wins via pin in 10 matches against the Alliance, Neb., Bulldogs Tuesday at Willi Gymnasium en route to a 48-28 victory.

Blazer senior Mitch Schlager got things rolling for Torrington at 171 pounds with a pin of Pedro Monroy in 42 seconds and after Alliance took a forfeit at 189 pounds to tie the match at 6-6, Torrington’s Boyd Derr dropped an 8-1 decision to Dominick Boyles at 285 pounds.

At 103 and 112 pounds, Torrington’s Craig Phillips and Roman Herrea both took forfeits to push the Blazer lead to 24-13.

In the match of the night, Torrington’s Tyler Cearns fell to Alliance’s Tyson Dowler, 15-12.

Both grapplers battled back and forth throughout the first two periods with both wrestlers getting near falls.

Cearns took a narrow 9-7 lead at the end of the second period, but Dowler quickly turned the tide in the opening 30 seconds of the third period.

Dowler put Cearns on his back and received three points for the near fall to take a 10-9 lead with just under 1:30 remaining.

On a restart, Dowler was whistled for his third caution to award Cearns a point to tie the match at 10-10 and the Torrington junior looked to take advantage.

Cearns quickly got a reversal on Dowler to take a 12-10 lead, but Dowler continued the reversal to attain two points of his own and closed out the match with a near fall to earn the 15-12 win.

Dowler’s victory cut the Blazers lead to 24-16 and Torrington dominated the next four matches.
